Wonderscopes: Reading App
Since I have been teaching from home I have found so many fun apps you can use on an iPad or phone that I never knew even existed. I have also become a tad obsessed with anything augmented reality because I think I have an idea of what I want my Master’s project to be next year and let’s just say augmented reality meets dramatic play (I’ll share more once I have done something with it).
When searching for something to add to my google classroom I found this amazing and FREE app called Wonderscope. Basically they let any kid jump into the story and become a part of the world. My favorite thing about it, besides the augmented reality, was the reading. This app makes the student read to the app. It highlights each word as you read it! I am obsessed.
It is so hard for some of pre-readers to get them interested in wanting to read. I thought this app would be an amazing starting point because lets face it, if the student feels like they’re playing, they rarely object to the activity.
I was hoping that the stories were based on real books so that the student could transition from the app to the real book. Unfortunately, they seem to be stories made by the app themselves. I would love an Augmented Reality app that used books I had in the classroom. If you hear of any please comment and let me know.
For now, this app is a great one to send over google classroom. I think I will also add it to my iPad for free time next year.
Happy Teaching :)
