CVC Mail Sort

I have my February Literacy Night coming up and was so excited to find this completely free resource from Teachers Pay Teachers by Jessica Fredrickson. It’s always a tiny celebration when ever you find a resource that is free.

I decided to laminate the mailboxes and the envelope pictures so that this can be something I could save and use every year. I love to do this because it makes it very easy to have something on hand last minute for students to work with.

The point of the game is that students have to put the picture with it’s corresponding middle vowel letter. For example, Sun has a u in the middle so it would go on the u mail box. Then once all of the envelopes have been sorted the student writes the words down on the Middle Mailbox worksheet.

I love this resource because the students first are given a visual and something tactile to use. They then have a visual to sound out the words which is great for beginning readers. It also is great at helping our little guys work on their phonemic awareness, specifically segmenting their sounds which is a key foundational skill to help them learn to read.

Since this is a younger student activity I would use it with Kindergarten and 1st graders under these standards:

Kindergarten:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.BCount, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.D
Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.1 (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)

1st Grade:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.C
Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.

Happy Teaching :)
