Finger Spacers

I recently have been struggling with my students writing when it comes to the spacing between their words. For some reason, using their own fingers seems way too big of a space so I had to find an alternative idea to help with this. I found this awesome resource on Teachers Pay Teachers by for free by the Crafty OT!

I loved these because the students were able to color a hand and make it unique to them. I think that any time you can personalize a tool for the student the more buy-in you have with them. I also put their name on the back of the finger in case any one decided to be picky about having to have their own. Once the sheet was colored in I laminated it and cut them out.

They now are stored with the erasers in a bucket so that they can be easily reached when we are working on writing. For our writing practice I have been loving these worksheets on of course, Teachers Pay Teachers by Empowering OT by Dr. R. The students have to come up with one sentence and then we make corrections together on their letter formation, spacing, punctuation, capitalization, and punctuation.

We keep doing this 5 times so that they receive a lot of practice on what a sentence needs. Once they master one sentence than we go onto writing two and so on. The best part about these worksheets is that it offers a word bank and a guide on the bottom of what they letters should look like when you write them. This has been a great tool for my students who are working on improving their handwriting.

I hope this gave you a great idea of what you can use for those pesky squished writers. I have seen clothespins used, popsicle sticks, and so many other things for finger spacers so the possibilities and creativity with this is endless!

Happy Teaching :)
