AAC Cart
I am so obsessed with our AAC Cart to have students ask for classroom tools from glue to scissors. My students are all working on communicating clearly and by incorporating this fun cart they now have to ask every time they want a crayon, pencil, etc.
This means they have another opportunity throughout the day to communicate. We created magnetic PECs to put on the cart so the student can easily see the item they need. Each item is then in a clear toolbox to be sorted and easy for us adults to grab during a hectic day. Everything is organized and clearly labeled making it super easy to use and find the tool we need.
The goal of this cart is to ensure my students are talking and/or communicating as much as possible. Before this week they all had their own tool box filled with these items easily within reach. By taking the items away and putting them in a cart away from their desk the students have to:
1- Move: They get a minute break to get up and take a break from working. This may really help some students refocus and get the wiggles out before getting back to focusing on their work.
2-Communicate: Whether they are talking or using PECs to communicate my students have to do something to get something. They have to communicate in their way to get the tool they need.
This AAC cart is a small and easy way to teach new words/vocabulary and so much more. You could create one in a million ways to make learning new words fun for students and the possibilities are truly endless.
Happy Teaching :)
