Daily Warm-Up: Evan-Moor
I am a huge believer in routine. I think that routine builds consistency and over time can help you meet some pretty amazing goals. I try to reflect this in my daily warm-ups that I use with my older students right now in grades 3-5. We are working on spelling to help with their writing skills and so each day when they come in we spend about 5-10 minutes reviewing how to spell.
I have found these Evan-Moor books that are amazing! They have every thing that you can think of for a daily warm-up. I love these because I can target my resource students skills with just one book. Stuck on spelling- we got it. Need some help with math, there’s a book for that. What about correcting sentences, yup they made it. They have a million books to choose from it seems with whatever my student may be struggling with.
I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet, they are tied to common core! These books have helped me out so much in the past 3 years when I, the teacher, am struggling. Sometimes you know you need something quick that you can build into a routine that will help your students build and strengthen their skills but you don’t know what it is. Sometimes they don’t need a 20-30 minute lesson on it like reading or comprehension. Also sometimes our curriculum may be missing spelling components or writing techniques. It’s hard to find something that fills every gap of learning and that’s when I turn to these books.
They help me fill the gaps when I see a student struggling. I recently visited their site and they have even more topics than I could think of. They have science which will be so much fun to use next year to help sprinkle some science in from time to time and have a lesson at hand that relates to common core.
I highly recommend these books for any thing you may feel like your students need extra practice on.
Visit Evan-Moor to see all they have to offer. I buy one copy and then make copies for the entire class or group of students that need them so that it doesn’t cost me a lot of money. You can then make a master copy and keep it in a filing cabinet or binder for easy access in the future.
I hope this gave you a great idea of how to fill the gaps in your classroom in a structured way!
Happy Teaching :)
